Wearing vests for safety

Wearing reflective vests is a safety feature to offer greater visibility while walking or running in dusk, early evening hours or at night. Reflective vests are good for bicyclists as well. Think of all the times outside during periods of low light.

Reflective vests are available for purchase through Amazon and they come in a variety of sizes and styles. While not glamorous, the vests can help motorists see you or your children. The vests are especially useful for Halloween Trick or Treating or for giving as holiday gifts.

Options for reflective vests and clothing

Get peace of mind with the Brooks Nightlife Mesh Vest comes in two different sizes and features a combination of reflective and high-visibility materials.

According to the website, Fastskier.com, the vest was manufactured after the training death in 2009 of skier Willie Neal. “New England Nordic Ski Association (NENSA) board member and LL Bean CMO Steve Fuller spearheaded a project to bring a low-cost, highly functional reflective vest to market.”

The Brooks reflective vests have a stylish appearance and fit well giving runners, bicyclists, and walkers the right combination of comfort and safety.

Try the Neiko High Visibility Neon Green Zipper front safety vest for an alternative.

The Boston Industrial Safety Vest with Reflective Strips are an option for a reflective vest that is affordable for anyone. One reviewer on Amazon wrote, “The vest was comfortable, left room for my arms to move, may be worn over winter clothing (I am from Wisconsin), yet light for summer wear.”

Reflective clothing as gifts and year round safety

Reflective vests can be worn from October to February and they’re also a smart idea to wear during summer nights.

Another use of the reflective vests is for nighttime hiking during any time of the year or for Nordic or downhill skiers. The vests, combined with the use of an easy-to-carry flashlight like Garrity, greatly increases the safety factor.

This statement from Bicyclesafe.com offers a great reminder that “High quality reflective gear makes you a lot more visible even in the day time, not just at night.”

The article makes the point that wearing a helmet will make you safer, but it doesn’t prevent you getting hit by a car.

Our adult son was recently riding a Razor scooter during the late afternoon in July when he crossed the street in a crosswalk and was hit by a car. Fortunately, he was alright even though he suffered one broken bone, bruises, and scrapes.

Youth sports players who might have to wait for a ride home after practice may find that wearing reflective vests increases their chances of being noticed. It can be a safety feature, too, in case of nearby suspicious activity.

In Tampa, a new city ordinance means the homeless (or those soliciting from cars at intersections) are required to wear reflective vests! So it’s not just an upscale idea. Buy some off of Amazon and then donate the vests!

We’ve also used reflective gear and red flashing lights for walking our dogs, too.

With prices as affordable as they are, and the many nice styles from which to choose, there really is no excuse for not wearing reflective clothing in the daytime or evening and remaining safe. Buying one now is a great way to stay safe in the Fall or at any time of the year.

This is really necessary information for outdoor enthusiasts. Wearing these reflective vests could really save a life if the folks in other areas drive their cars like they do in south Florida. Auto brakes never wear out - no one uses them. Horns, on the other hand, are a different story.

Glad to hear that Tampa is taking the lead in mandatory reflective gear.

Unfortunately, in this community where I live, which has sidewalks, many residents, including those pushing baby trams, choose to walk or bike in the roadways instead. Most wear no reflective gear at dawn, dusk, or at night.

Thanks for the inspiration to bring this issue up at our next Association meeting. The gear is readily available and there's no excuse for not having it.

drbj, what a great line "Auto brakes never wear out - no one uses them." So are there a lot of accidents in south Florida? Yes, Sally, the vests do seem quite affordable. We carry a flashlight with us when we walk at night - the Garrity which is now linked to this Hub.

This is such a useful hub. Many cars cannot see pedestrians or bicyclists at night, especially if they are wearing dark clothing. As an avid runner, I highly recommend the use of reflective vests because it is another way to increase the safety of exercising outdoors. Thanks for sharing.

When the power went out a couple of months ago, it really didn't seem safe walking in the total dark along the sidewalks.
