Uses for calendars

Looking for calendars for business use or personal use? My favorite calendar is the At-a-Glance Calendar in its different forms and sizes. We have an At-a-Glance wall calendar hanging in the kitchen and I’ve used smaller sizes previously.

I like the yellow highlighted sections so important or strategic notes can stand out on the At-a-Glance calendar.

While calendars are functional, they can also serve as works of art, displays of creative photography, and reminders of a hometown with its different seasons.

Business use calendars

A calendar for entrepreneurs should serve as more than a way of scheduling appointments. An effective calendar will also have ways of detailing strategic tasks to accomplish and reminder of important meeting or quotes from prospective customers.

I bought a planner and calendar from the Paul J Meyer organization a few years ago. It came as part of an overall goal setting program. The calendar was a planner that listed “commitments/appointments” in one column. There were imperative action steps, important action steps, along with contacts and follow-ups in a separate column.

The planner calendar was integrated with a listing of top personal and business goals, high payoff activities along with an imperative action list and an important action list.

I felt the overall program was too expensive since it was sold to me for over $ 1,000.00. However, the calendar-planner itself was excellent and worth replicating.

The At a Glance calendar is nicely organized and is colorful. One of my favorites is the At a Glance Quick Notes monthly calendar that can hang on a wall or sit on a desk. There is plenty of space for writing notes. The blue color and yellow highlight space helps it stand out from all the papers in today’s “paperless office. This type of At a Glance calendar retails for less than $ 12.00.

At a Glance also produces erasable wall calendars and appointment books.

There is also a 16-month Quick Notes desk pad calendar for $16.99 with cash back available from TheNerds.net.

Fun calendars

Dogs, cats, and cows are among animals on popular fun calendars. Among the most creative calendars I’ve ever seen is the Noah’s Ark Advent Calendar from Garderner’s Supply Company.

Susan Winget Heart and Home Calendars are among the most warm calendars on the market. Thomas Kincaide Calendars are also the type that reflect his works of art.

It’s easy to find calendars that tie in to favorite sports or hobbies like hiking or classic car collecting.

Calendars make gifts for year round when the theme is tied to the person’s likes and personality.

Personalized calendar ideas

Here are unique ways of creating personalized calendars that have an important meaning to those who will receive them.

For Valentine’s Day, you can make a calendar of the most romantic dates taken in the past decade with a description of the date, the location, and the favorite wine or drink or meal served. Write about how you felt with your loved one at that time.

Adoptive parents might write a time line of when their child came into their home – or any parent can create a timeline with the dates of a child’s milestone or pictures of them growing up.

For entrepreneurs, even if they have calendars galore around their office, give a calendar along with a book of inspirational quotes or a subscription to a business magazine or something like the Wall Street Journal.

Give calendars as wedding gifts to track the milestones of a couple’s marriage or house warming gifts with a calendar filled in with recipes of favorite meals to create.

Another idea is make a commitment to write down the ways your loved one has blessed you throughout the year. At the end of that year, give the calendar to them as a gift with a loving note and tell them how much they mean to you—even if you don’t feel in love with them!

Calendars aren’t just a tool for writing down appointments coming up. They can serve as strategic tools for business or harbor memories and milestones in the lives of families and individuals. With colorful or artistic photos, calendars can add an elegant touch and meaning to a person’s life.

Creating calendars on a PC in Word and iCal Mac

Interested in creating calendars for the classroom? Here's a tip from Microsoft:

You can create calendars using the calendar templates that are designed for a number of 2007 Microsoft Office 2007 suites applications. Many templates are installed with the 2007 Microsoft Office system, but even more are available online, including a Calendar Wizard. You can access and use calendar templates in Office Word 2007, and you can follow a similar process to create calendars in Office Excel, PowerPoint, Publisher, and Visio.

To create a calendar:

  1. Open Office Word 2007, click the Microsoft Office button, and then click New.
  2. In Templates, under Microsoft Office Online, click Calendars. Search online to find the largest variety of calendar templates. You may also find calendar templates in Installed Templates.
  3. In the center pane, you can:
  • Click a calendar category to view thumbnails.
  • Click a thumbnail to view details in the right pane.
  • Click the arrows at the top of the pane to navigate between levels.

When you find a calendar you want to use, in the right pane, click Download. The template is downloaded to your computer and opens in a new document.

For those who use Mac, this is a tip from Myfirstmac.com:

For a quick and dirty blank calendar to print from, you'll want to open iCal and make sure you have a calendar in the left column without any events in it. The print options box wants you to select at least one calendar, so if you want it blank, make sure you have one to choose.

Then just select Print in the File menu to get the options box. Turn off as many options as you want to make an empty one. Note how you can change the paper size in case you want other size options. Also note that you can choose between Month, Week, Day and List views.

Calendar With My Events and Holidays

The process is the same as above, but this time you'll want to check the boxes for options you want to include. Note that you can use subscriptions to many types of events such as US Holidays or sports schedules to populate your calendar. This is also a good time to color code your different calendars because iCal will print the events out in color. So spend some time to dial in your normal iCal view before going to Print.

Calendar with Events PLUS Graphic Themes and Pictures

To get some really cool themed layouts and pictures, you'll want to combine your efforts in iCal with iPhoto. Go ahead and start in iCal and get your various calendars dialed in just right. Then go to iPhoto and start making a photo album with photos you'll want in your calendar.

My wife lives and dies by her calendar! It works very well for her.

Yes, mine puts everything down on ours as well. I've been keeping quite a bit in my head . . . a dangerous thing to try! Thanks for the comment.

Howdy Don - Does anyone make a calendar that shows but one day a month? That's about how often I am awake enough to use one.

Gus :-)))

Howdy Gus, glad to know your awake on Christmas Eve! I'm sure you could create a calendar to choose which day per month you're up and at 'em! Depending on how you do it, it could either use a very small amount of paper or a huge amount if you're planning to make a calendar with one day per month and account for each person's habits!

I prefer the "real" calendars to the one on my cell phone and laptop. There's something about seeing a note written in your own writing that makes you take a more serious look at it.

That's an excellent point, Jalus. It's also a matter of habit. I always forget about the calendar on my cell phone and laptop. I've started using the calendar on my MacBook but it's true I'd rather have one I can write on and hang near my desk or carry with me to write additional notes.

Thank you for this useful Hub. I love using daily planners to remind myself—in my old age—what I need to do. Well done!

Thanks, James. Old age? You? Nah! Planners are fun to use. They help me think strategically.
