How to overcome writers block
65Write what you know
One way to overcome writer's block is to pause and take an assessment of all the elements in your world:
- what you know,
- the town you live in,
- the neighborhood you live in,
- what's in your garden,
- how good or bad your lawn looks,
- what you like or dislike about your car,
- why your love life (or even sex life) is good, bad or indifferent.
Right there are 7 different categories to use as fuel for overcoming writer's block. Why not also try travel around the world, travel in your state, travel in your own little town even if you live in the middle of nowhere? Write about the nearest little no-name bed and breakfast or motel.
Simply choose one of those categories and write a Hub of 400 words, online article of 400 words, or submit to a local magazine or newspaper for publication.
Here are other ideas:
- Write about a successful small business in your town, city
- Write a political opinion and don't worry about what others think
- Write about a favorite Christmas gift you received and a favorite gift you gave
- Write about a car you like to drive and why it's your favorite
- Interview a state, county or city politician on the local economy.
Write out writer's block!
Organize to overcome writer's block
I have so many ideas to overcome writer's block that another problem of having too many ideas and not enough time to write about them chokes my creative process.Organizing by creating an editorial calendar or hard copy filing system is crucial for me to overcome my own writer's block.
While I'm writing this, I have on my dining table, several yellow sheets of paper. On top of each one is written something like this: SoCal travel and tourism, Adoption and Family, Business stories and there are a few others.
I'm taking the mess of papers in my study near my computer and organizing them under each yellow sheet. Then I'll create a separate folder for each one and then write up an editorial list. These are my own assignments. I'll even attempt to have a deadline for each one.
This process helps me clear my mind, allows me to focus despite the many distractions in each day and then frees me up to write faster and strategically.
I write more effectively when I don't worry about "what am I going to churn out this week" which is one reason I've not successfully completed 30 Hubs in 30 days.
But the more I work at organizing my hard copy clippings and story ideas into files, the easier it is for me to create an editorial calendar and then sit down to create and write. That is how I conquer and overcome writer's block.
