Iran and Saudi Arabia
In February 2010, the Iranians started exploratory drilling in the Caspian Sea. In 2009, the country launched its first offshore oil platform in the Caspian. Recently, CNN ran an article February 11, 2010, on how low oil prices could hurt Iran and be used as a bargaining tool.
“A desire to bring Iran to the bargaining table over its nuclear program could keep oil prices low worldwide for the next several months.
"Some analysts say Saudi Arabia, which has taken millions of barrels a day off world oil markets in response to falling demand, may open the taps if oil prices get too high.
The Saudi's don't want high oil prices to hurt any global economic rebound. But they also don't want Iran, a rival in the region that has a nuclear program many say is designed to make weapons, to benefit from high oil prices."They are seeking to maintain financial pressure on Iran as the U.S. seeks to build support for additional sanctions over the nuclear issue," Greg Priddy, a global energy analyst at the Eurasia group, a political risk consultancy, said in a recent research note.”

Thanks, Amber, for commenting. I believe it has to be two pronged: reduce dependency on foreign oil while developing alternative energies. We'll always have to use oil. I appreciate the comment.
Hi Don
I agree the importance of developing alternative energies but to reduce our dependency we will also need to invest in technology which reduces the amount of energy we use to heat our homes and drive our cars for example but we also need to educate ourselves so that our lifestyles need less energy. So in summary I think we need a many pronged approach!
Amber.
Interesting numbers. It puts some different perspective on oil when you have facts.
Kee on hubbing!
Thanks, eovery. You're right. It does give perspective on oil as a global commodity and that the companies which are often referred to derisively as Big Oil really have global competition.

A very interesting hubshowing just how badly we need to reduce our dependency on oil!
