Writing on Hubpages for beginners

Choose themes to write multiple Hubs

Hubpages is a fun and different way to write online that allows a product or subject matter to cover in as few as 400 words to 1,500 words. Hubpages can be a good way to make an extra $ 10 a month to $ 900 a month or more online with only having the investment of time and no capital to risk.

Capsules are used to organize content and images: text, photos, video downloads, and affiliate products such as Amazon.

The most important thing about writing on Hubpages is organizing subject matter – the foundation for good writing in any medium. After writing 98 Hubs and ready to reach that magical number of 100, here’s my advice.

1 Sign up for Hubpages, of course, and sign up for the Google and Amazon affiliate programs. You can sign up here to become a Hubpages writer.

2 Choose one general subject matter to write your first five Hubs. Don’t worry or fret about making money at this point. You must develop content.

Example

Let’s say you’ve chosen “running” as your general subject matter.

Break the topic in to five different specific topics on running. Here’s what that could look like:

  • Hub 1 – Running as a way to enjoy a community
  • Hub 2 – Training tips for a 5K, 10K, half marathon, or marathon
  • Hub 3 – Common running injuries and how to avoid them
  • Hub 4 – Buying products online for runners – running shorts, running singlet’s, socks, shoes, lip balm, water bottles, and more. This becomes a product Hub and is the type that may do well with Amazon or Google Adsense.
  • Hub 5 – How to start a running club

3 Link the hubs together

After these five Hubs are written and posted, then link the Hubs together. Add links from the four Hubs to each of the other Hubs.

Better yet, write a 6th Hub that is a “running overview” Hub and contains a brief paragraph and links to the other five. The links help the search engines crawl in more depth and detail. The links also serve as all-important backlinks and allow visitors to navigate from one Hub to another.

Try to keep this pattern or create a similar pattern. It can cut down on writing time and brainstorming for each article. For example, write on the theme of babysitting.

One Hub can be on how teens can prepare to babysit by taking first aid/ CPR classes.

A second Hub can be on products teen or young adult babysitters can take to entertain a toddler – like children DVDs, Hula hoops, puppets, or more.

A third Hub can be on how a babysitter can increase income by offering other services to the same families like dog walking.

Then link the Hubs together.

On occasion, or more often if time is available, try to write a Flagship Hub of 1,000 words to 1,500 words using a few pictures and a few video clips.

Participate on the forums and comment on other Hubs as you can. Try to make 10 to 15 comments each week on other Hubs. This helps increase your number of followers. I haven’t done this as actively as I should.

Finally, choose two or three different veteran Hubbers to follow and learn how they assemble their Hubs. Read how many have “product” Hubs, how to Hubs, inspirational Hubs and other types of Hubs. See who their audience is.

And continue writing. Writing and learning is the best way to improve.

Great advice to help beginners to begin. Of all the social networking pages available Hubpages is the only one I use. Sometimes I Tweet but for the two limiting lines of space they give you and no photo I don't feels worth it. But maybe I am missing something there. I have thought about posting on Facebook, but not sure about that. Thanks for the above information. It is helpful.

Thanks, World-Traveler. I like Tweeting. True, I don't get too much traffic from it and I do post on Facebook. However, much of my traffic comes from search engines.

Great advice Don. I've only been using Hubpages for a few weeks now and have already learned a lot. I think so far my hubs have been on too many different subject matters. I'm going to try to focus my next 5 hubs in one niche like you recommend to see if that helps increase my traffic. Thanks for the help.
